In this series about CalMHSA staff, we offer a profile of our colleagues and why they’ve chosen to contribute to the work we do.
Meet Delphine Huang, MD, Medical Director of Innovation and Design Transformation
New to CalMHSA and integral to the ongoing EHR design and implementation is Delphine Huang, MD. Delphine joined the CalMHSA team in April as Medical Director of Innovation and Design Transformation – and she’s also an actively practicing emergency medicine physician based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
“I know that, ultimately, at the county level people are doing so much extra work simply because they care,” she said. “I’m inspired to help drive change not only county by county but across the state.”
Delphine previously worked at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where she was responsible for Emergency Department (ED) care coordination and discharge planning, including outpatient follow-up pathways, managing medications for individuals who were unhoused, and improving hand-off communications between the ED and justice system.
Most recently, Delphine was the Medical Director at IDEO, a human-centered design and research firm, where she supported the design experience of health products, services, and strategies. In that capacity, she collaborated with CalMHSA on the semi-statewide EHR’s user interface for outpatient psychiatrists.
“My passion lies in transforming health experiences, from individual clinical care to systems implementation,” she said. “I’m thrilled to bring my skills in design research and user experience to contribute to CalMHSA’s goals for delivering meaningful and positive change to Medi-Cal’s mental health services and communities.”
As a practicing provider, she brings a valuable perspective of the EHR’s overall user experience and interface with consideration of the user’s needs, on-boarding and workflow, as well as impact on technical development and systems implementation.
“We’re very excited about all that Delphine can contribute to our work with counties,” said Executive Director Amie Miller. “Her experience as a county physician, as someone who has worked on system design within health care delivery, and as a former contributor to the direction of this EHR make her uniquely qualified to bring even deeper expertise to our team.”
